Here’s your unemployment update for Sunday, January 17th, 2021
The head of a security firm working for the state of California is warning that payments of fraudulent claims could more than double the $4 billion previously estimated.
Blake Hall, founder, and chief executive of the company ID.me., stated, “at least 10% of unemployment claims may have been fraudulent before controls were installed in October.”
A 10% fraud rate could total $9.8 billion of the benefits paid from March through September.
Hall also stated, “Much of the fraud in California and other states is coming from organized criminal gangs operating in some 20 foreign countries, including Russia, China, Nigeria, Ghana, Turkey, and Bulgaria.”
Hall’s firm was hired by the EDD to begin checking unemployment claims in October, and since then 30% of the claims it screened turned out to be fraudulent.
It’s just been really interesting following along with this case but beneficial for states to learn how to best prevent frauds in the future.
Up next, The Kansas Department of Labor announced Friday it will start doling out money Congress passed in December to extend unemployment assistance.
But they did not provide an exact time frame for people who have been waiting and watching the federal money get distributed in other states.
The department said, “We are working to implement these programs now. We expect to see these programs in place in the coming days and weeks.”
On Friday, the Kansas Department of Labor posted a chart showing how long and how much people can be paid for claims from Jan. 2 through March 13th.
These payments will be retroactive from Jan. 2nd.
We are remaining positive that they will disperse your unemployment benefits soon.
And finally, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development announced Friday it has started issuing a $300 unemployment insurance supplement.
The announcement comes close to three weeks after President Donald Trump signed the new benefits into law.
The supplement, known as Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), adds $300 a week.
The three-week lag in getting FPUC payments out to recipients means that many unemployment recipients are owed $300 back-payments for each the program was payable.
According to the department’s website, they plan to issue that back-pay to recipients during the week ending Jan. 23rd.
The department is still working to set up benefits made available under two other unemployment programs PUA and PEUC.
So, if you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, kick the weekend into overdrive and apply today
All you have to do is click on your state’s PUA or UI website, upload your employment history and identification documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there
