According to ID.me, “More than $200 billion of unemployment benefits distributed in the pandemic may have been pocketed by thieves.”
Blake Hall, CEO and cofounder of ID.me, explained: “The level of fraud is truly unprecedented. The main driver is the PUA program… For criminals, this program essentially makes every American and their identity a target.”
Hall also stated: “We are currently working with 22 states to combat unemployment fraud. We were working with just one state in July 2020. The states have moved quickly to upgrade their defenses.”
Hopefully some of these funds can be recouped, as $200 billion would do so much good for the millions of unemployment claimants that are entitled to these stimulus extended enhanced unemployment benefits.
Meanwhile, the great state of Arkansas announced that they will finally be paying out the additional $100 weekly Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC).
According to a press release from the Arkansas Workforce Services: “MEUC provides an additional $100 weekly in extra benefits to eligible claimants who have at least $5,000 in net income from self-employment during the most recent taxable year. MEUC benefits will be available from the week ending January 2, 2021 through the week ending September 4, 2021.”
Unfortunately, they also stated that Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claimants are not eligible for MEUC.
Eligible claimants must prove their claim on the Arkansas unemployment website, but could provide you with an extra $3,600 in unemployment benefits over the course of the year.
Check to see if your state is offering MEUC for self employed Americans.
Finally, a recent interview on The Current, a podcast on the Brookings Network, outlined just what unemployment claimants can expect to receive out of the new $1.9 trillion stimulus bill, the American Rescue Plan.
Adrianna Pita spoke with Lauren Bauer, a fellow in Economic Studies and the Hamilton Project, where she outlined the many incredible government unemployment benefits that are being offered in the new $1.9 trillion stimulus package.
Bauer explained: “What is going to be extended from March to September 6 is that many people who normally wouldn’t qualify for unemployment insurance – PUA claimants – are going to be able to receive benefits for up to 79 weeks.”
She continued: “As well, in terms of length of time, people who normally receive unemployment insurance will be able to stay on pandemic emergency unemployment compensation PEUC for about double the number of weeks, from 24 to 53 weeks.”
With about 20 million people still receiving some form of unemployment insurance right now, it’s great to see these vital unemployment benefits extended for over a year and a half.
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, what are you waiting for? Apply today.
Check out your state’s PUA or UI website, show them your employment history and identifying documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there, if that’s the case.

To all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, don’t miss out on these PUA funds because you think you aren’t eligible for unemployment benefits.
