The Labor Department continues to warn Americans of unemployment fraud, which has seen a loss of $63 billion in funds that should be in the pockets of deserving citizens.

To make sure that you don’t fall victim to one of these fraudulent unemployment schemes and are able to claim your unemployment disaster relief funds, here are some tips to combat the scammers.

Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, explained: “be alert to any suspicious mail, phone calls, email or social media requests. These could be attempts to gather personal information or a sign of existing fraud.”

She also stated: “If you are a victim, reach out to your state unemployment office to report the fraud. If there were false claims in multiple states, reach out to each state individually.”

Yellen stated: “The most significant risk we face is a workforce that’s scarred by a long period of unemployment.”

Yellen also praised the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, stating that: “it will provide relief to people who need it, particularly the unemployed.”

These bold predictions are great news for a recovering American economy, and should mean hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the coming months and a roarding country by 2022.

Lastly, the IRS is finally offering guidance on how Americans across the country can take advantage of the $10,200 unemployment tax credit on their yearly tax returns.

If you’ve already filed your tax return before the new $1.9 trillion stimulus package was signed into law, the IRS suggests waiting a little while longer to file your amendment with Form 1040-X until more guidance is offered.

If you have not filed your taxes, the IRS says: “you should report the total amount of unemployment compensation you received on line 7 of Schedule 1.”

They also said to note whether or not your state collects taxes on unemployment benefits, on top of federal taxes.

Hopefully this information clears the air regarding how you can take advantage of the recently approved $10,200 unemployment tax credit to ensure you get hundreds of dollars.

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, get a head start on the week and apply today.
