The Royal Cabinet of Morocco has revealed that King Mohammed VI and President Buhari of the Republic of Nigeria, have recently affirmed their commitment to the construction of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.
The project estimated at $25 billion will be an extension of the West African pipeline, which will link Nigeria to the coastal cities in West Africa and end at Tangiers, Morocco, at a distance of about 5,660 kilometers. The pipeline is also expected to connect with Spain through Cádiz. The 678km West African Gas Pipeline is the first regional natural gas transmission infrastructure developed in Sub-Saharan Africa, connects Nigeria with Benin, Togo and Ghana, which was officially commissioned in 2007.
Natural gas pipelines primarily serve as a means of moving gas from the field to consumers. Inter- and intrastate pipelines are used for the transportation of natural gas produced from gas fields, either onshore or offshore facilities through gathering systems to commercial, residential, industrial, and utility companies. The pipelines are usually constructed of carbon steel and varying in size from 2 inches to 56 inches in diameter, depending on the type of pipeline. A natural gas transportation system is made up of compressor stations, pipelines, city gate stations, and storage facilities. The compressor station serves as the heart of the transmission system as it supplies the energy required to ensure that the gas continues to flow at a prescribed flow rate and pressure.
