Kenya Power Announces Multi Billion Nationwide Electric Car Charging Stations

Kenya Power, the state-owned electricity company, has announced plans to install electric vehicle charging points as it hopes to capture revenue from a growing global focus on electric vehicles. According to a report by Business Daily, Kenya Power new strategy is to build a nationwide network of public charging stations on highways, parking lots and malls, to help in removing one of the hurdles for use of electric cars in Kenya. This is the direction to help achieve Kenya’s government plans to have at least 5% electric car share by the year 2025.
Kenya has joined the global push to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce reliance on petrol and diesel. Fuel products are the country’s biggest import item. Analysts acknowledge the high price of electric cars would not appeal to most African consumers , however, some are of the view that scaling up production and favorable government policy could help bring prices down, which will make electric cars much preferred in Kenya and other places in Africa.
In the report by Business Daily; Kenya Power managing director Bernard Ngugi, revealed that “As part of their implementation plan, they are developing appropriate infrastructure and building internal capacity to enable them to support the use of electric vehicles across the value chain,” For this reason, they plan to set up charging facilities across the nation beginning with the capital Nairobi to support direct charging of vehicles.
With this new development, Kenya Power joins Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), which also announced August last year, about its plans of investment in electric charging network and introduction of electric vehicles for public transportation. Scaling up the project will see both Kenya Power and KenGen generate revenue from vehicle owners who will require to charge their vehicles but this is heavily dependent on the technology picking up locally.
