Here’s your unemployment update for Saturday, March 27th, 2021
A Los Angeles man allegedly obtains $3 million in state unemployment benefits using the identities of 23 inmates.

The man allegedly submitted at least 400 fraudulent claims with the California Economic Development Department from March 30th to Sept. 8th, 2020.

At least 120 of those claims were filed under the names of inmates incarcerated in California prisons.

The agency stated, “EDD continues to partner with federal, state, and local authorities in fighting the work of scammers sitting on a treasure trove of stolen identity information from the dark web.”

According to the Bay Area News Group, the state agency paid $10.4 billion to claimants with unverified identities and $810 million to prison inmates.

We hope the department continues to crack down on fraud and finds a way to get these much-needed funds back.

Meanwhile, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation is proposing an emergency resolution that would provide unemployment insurance to education support staff for the upcoming summer.

Currently, education support staff are not eligible for unemployment except in “limited circumstances.”

Now, the agency has the authority to propose emergency resolutions, as provided under Senate Bill 3 in last year’s special session.

The proposal would use the American Rescue Plan to allow the federal government to cover 75 percent of the cost for reimbursable employers, like school districts.

This would allow education support staff to apply for unemployment benefits this summer.

As we know, schools across American have risked so much this last year and this could be such a relief for so many who do so much for our communities.

And finally, Vermont is currently in a heated debate on the Senate floor about a bill that would increase weekly unemployment benefits by 20%.

Heavy negotiating between Senate leaders repeatedly stalled a vote by the upper chamber during the past week, and the chamber finally took up the bill Friday.

After days of committee discussions, lawmakers reached an amendment that would send claimants with dependents $50 in additional weekly benefits for five years and freezing employers’ tax unemployment insurance schedule.

Senator Jane Kitchel stated, “I have spent a lot of time thinking about this bill, and it weighs heavily on me, because we get into this world of ‘if you vote one way you’re for businesses, if you vote another way you’re for workers.”

Discussions still are ongoing and the Senate is set to reconvene next Tuesday.
